a- le drapeau officiel

Le drapeau néo-zélandais regroupe deux éléments : l'Union-Jack et la Croix du Sud.
L'Union-Jack, drapeau du Royaume-Uni, traduit l'appartenance de la Nouvelle-Zélande au Commonwealth.
Les quatre étoiles rouges symbolisent les quatre étoiles les plus brillantes de la Croix du Sud, constellation de l'hémisphère austral, servant autrefois aux navigateurs de repère d'orientation.

b- Le drapeau des Maoris :

Ce drapeau maori a été conçu en 1990. Le noir représente l'obscurité d'où le monde a émergé ; le blanc représente le monde physique, la pureté, l'harmonie ; le rouge représente la couleur de la terre où le premier humain à été crée.
Le symbole central (« Koru ») représente la nouvelle vie, le renouvellement, l'espoir.

c- Quelques symboles nationaux

d- L'hymne national

La Nouvelle Zélande a deux hymnes nationaux :

– "God save the Queen_" (l'hymne britannique) ;

. - "God Defend New Zealand" . (cf. mp3 ci-joint)

Les paroles ont été écrites en 1870 par Thomas Bracken qui décida de lancer un concours afin de trouver la meilleure musique possible. Le vaincqueur fut John Joseph Woods, un professeur. En 1940, cet hymne est adopté par la Nouvelle Zélande.

Ecrit à l'origine en anglais, les paroles ont été traduites en Maori et on chante aujourd'hui un couplet en en Maori, puis sa traduction en anglais :

e- Les Maoris

Les Maoris, d'origine polynesienne, sont les premiers habitants à être arrivés en Nouvelle-Zélande il y a un peu plus de mille ans. Ils furent très hostiles à l'arrivée des premiers occidentaux, notamment Tasman et Cooke.

Aujourd'hui, les deux peuples vivent en paix, et la culture et la langue maori sont desormais enseignées à l'école.
